Looking up your online clinician
Who is assessing me?
Find the person behind the visit. Then check the record that applies to their role and your location.
Get the person’s name and role
Ask who will assess you, what their professional role is and which board holds their licence. A licence is a state’s permission to practice.
State medical boards show whether a doctor has a current licence. They also publish penalties for breaking professional rules, or formal charges: accusations the board has not yet decided. What they publish varies by state. This medical-board information was checked in September 2026.
Different health professions have different boards. Start with the person’s role, rather than searching only for the company name.
Use the state where you will be
For an online visit, the professional needs permission from the state where you are during the appointment. This US health-department guidance was checked in September 2026.
If you will be away from home, say where the appointment will take place. Ask how the service handles that location.
Some states let a professional licensed elsewhere register for online visits instead of getting a full licence there. Registration means the state has given permission for that kind of care. Its conditions vary by state. This was checked in September 2026.
Read the record, then ask about the gaps
For a directory of state boards for medical doctors, turn to the Federation of State Medical Boards. The directory was checked in September 2026.
The letters DO after a name identify a medical doctor. DO names the kind of medical degree. Some states keep these doctors’ licence records at a separate board.
Ask which board lists your doctor. Compare the name, whether the licence is current and any penalties or formal charges shown. If an entry is hard to read, ask the board what it means.
The board directory is linked on the further-reading page.
